MANTAS EZCARAY carries on the legacy that Cecilio Valgañón brought about in 1930 when he transformed cloth production into handlooms for the creation of scarves, shawls, and blankets. The Skilful, hands of experts transform the best natural fibers that nature provides into beautiful and colourful threads. The incorporation of Mohair into his creations in 1950 has marked his path to the present day making the most desirable blankets in the world. From 1970 onwards, the founder’s children began to get closer to the company, and now, almost a century later, Cecilio´s grandchildren have joined the firm taking EZCARAY all over the world!

We talked with Ignacio Valgañón Iriarte one of Cecilio Valgañón grandchildren about the past, present, and future of the company.

How is it to work for a company with such a legacy?

For us it is an honor and a privilege to continue with the business founded by our grandfather Cecilio in 1930.
We continue with the same philosophy and ambition, the concept of craftsmanship and the traditional production process remains intact, with the problems that this brings us constantly, so it is a nice challenge.

What do you think it’s the best part of having several generations involved in the company?

The best part of carrying on the family legacy is that the know-how stays with the company. It is something very important and very valuable to us and it really is the essence of this business.

Is it hard to preserve the traditional methods and skills in today's world?

It is very complicated to continue using traditional production methods when you are in a process of growth, and above all when you have deadlines to respect and meet.
We are trying to optimize our production by improving processes and innovating in everything that is within our reach, keeping in mind that this production process is what makes us special and unique.

Colour is a defining characteristic of your wonderful products. Are you still using the original colours used by Cecilio Valgañón, or do you add new ones frequently? If so, how do you choose them?

Indeed, color is something that totally defines Mantas Ezcaray. Our grandfather was a lover of bright colors and he loved purple tones. We have a wide range of colors that we update every season, we still use the same colors that our grandfather used, but we are up to date in terms of trends, both with new colors and new designs.

How do you see the future of ESCARAY?

We see a promising future, as we are gradually improving a lot of internal processes that are helping us to grow better. We are still eager to do things well and to improve, so if all goes well we hope to be at the head of this business for many years to come.
