Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro had a special fondness for cats. The man himself, in a comic book story in the newspaper “António Maria” confesses to having been “a cat in another incarnation”. His cats became well known in his cartoons and ceramics, perhaps because cats are animals that scratch frequently, in a similar attitude to the political satire of his cartoons.
